We are based in Motueka, just south of Abel Tasman. Yesterday we thought we would take a short drive and then hike, missed a turn, and drove almost to the top of Abel Tasman, many many switchbacks away. What panoramas, fog on peaks, and finally a pretty, deserted beach. We saw lots of apples and kiwis on trees, sheep (duh) and other domestic critters. Back at dusk, we wandered a few blocks to the local RSA (returning service associations...VFW equivalent). Humble outside but very modern inside, and we watched a rugby game on big screen tv...and looked at each other frequently as some of the moves/scores baffle us. Good prices on beer so while we kept to ourselves we enjoyed.
Today we got on the tourist boat that skirts the coast of Abel Tasman. Saw seals, and gorgeous coves/beaches, with coral colored water. At one point they dropped off hikers and we started off on what is designed as a two and one half hour hike. Spurred by my pard, we did it in and hour and a half...leaving even the young, long legged Swedes to muddle. We then caught an earlier boat back to a beach town for a beer/sandwich, then got back to our camp in time for a hot tub and chicken on the grill. Interesting to watch folks from many nations show up on the common outside cooking areas and prepare their meals, each bringing their own pans and food items. Keep in mind that we are in a camper van camp, with some tenting, some in small cabins. I like that everyone is aware of their neighbor...and the camp gets very quiet about nine at night.
We appreciate feedback, as we feel the pangs of being far away. Tomorrow, still in planning, we may go to the Murchison area (mimi has a fixation on trout fishing), then on to Westport because Joe says we have to....

ReplyDeleteAvez-vous vu des requins ?
Bises .
Your trip sounds so wonderful!! I am "so" surprised that your minature partner kept the gate of a 6'10' giant!! I remember Jason remarking on the campgrounds and the community cooking and that he thought that was really cool. Lucien asks for Nana every once in a while... we'll have to try Skype again soon! Your travels are so cool... we're really happy for you that you've taken this trip!
ReplyDeleteWe love and miss you both xo
