Sydney

G'day,

Now we are in Sydney.  Our hotel is centrally located, and right on the edge of Chinatown.  Geoff G met us the first eve, and took us down to the harbor, where the impact is daunting, a wharf side restaurant between the Sydney Opera House and the famed Harbor Bridge.  Nice start, and we walked home of our own volition on George Street, step one in learning the city landscape.  Tons of people everywhere, culturally diverse, and vibrant.  Yesterday was a day on our own, so we again walked to the harbor, intending to just probe best times for the Harbor Bridge climb, and whether Jersey Boys was indeed playing at the Opera House.  Walking into the Bridge Climb office, they noted that they could “get us on” in 10 minutes.  We signed up and were shortly in changing room for climbing outfits (comfy janitorial style wind suits), and relieved of anything that could drop on the boats, cars and so forth way below.   Way below.  We went through climb training (much around the fact that you are wired by a harness for the whole time, and can get wild by moving about 10 inches off route-- anyway very safe and calm way to get loads of people up on top of the bridge and down
over a couple of hours.  Great views of Sydney Harbor, boats and other climbers, and Nicole Kidman’s new digs.   We had a quick lunch then walked to the nearby Opera House, only to glean that it was closed and no sign of the Jersey Boys in the next few days.  Impressive venue, and Mimi may take a tour there.  Next on this full day: a boat out to Manly Beach, a half hour away surfer beach with neat shops, and ambiance.  Next back to the mainland for a brisk walk back to China Town for a good meal on the very busy street right outside our Quest Hotel.  Today: horse races at Royal Ranwick.  Stay tuned, although I hope the morning rain ceases.
