Geelong and on the way to the Great Barrier Reef early April 2011

G'day and how you going?

We are in Port Douglas, very far north, the Great Barrier Reef jump-off point for us.  We flew this morning, Melbourne to Cairns, out of the sunshine of Melbourne into the mist, humidity and breezes here.  Micah, our super hostess, saw us to the bus early this morning.  We left her with plenty of Clare Valley wine and thanks for use of her car and as a tour guide extraordinaire and for introductions to others on the Dutch side of the family.
Busy five days: one day in Melbourne by train with Micah, for a walking tour of the city and a few hours with one of Kalamazoo’s finest, Tara (and her new serious hug, Greg). Way too short an evening. And what that cute little car Greg has, anyway?
I played golf twice, once with Phil and then joined by two of his friends...humbling as these guys pound the ball.  I winced through with my nine clubs and knowledge that I was playing one set of tees ahead of my talent (they were playing at 6600+ yards).  Anyhow,  impressive links type courses, sunshine, and very enjoyable.  I relearned army words .Phil and Jess (Micah’s sister) Draper also hosted us, twice for dinner, the first time with Roy (their brother) and his wife Hilary.
On a free day Mimi and I biked out to Drysdale, asking a bus driver if we might board for the return, but in the end making it back on our ‘bush bikes’ (bikes as opposed to motorcycles).  Last night in Geelong we were guests of Fred and Susie, Fred being the father of the family here.  Good company, a fabulous meal and and a stunningly beautiful modern home.
Ready for tomorrow’s reef experience.
